Palestinians in the city of Gaza wore unprotected hands and basic tools to look for loved ones arrested under the rubble of destroyed buildings after Israeli attacks.
Aboud Shamali, a 29 -year -old Palestinian looking for relatives, said he began work with a hammer until members of the Civil Defense arrived with “a sledgehammer and a grinder.”
“There is no equipment. If there were, we might have rescued 80% of those who were alive under the rubble,” added Shamali.
Another man, Mohammed Abu Amsha, who said he had lost 27 family members under the rubble, echoed Shamali’s difficulties with the lack of resources.
“We want to find these children, all my brothers are gone. Look at these ruins, we were destroyed,” he said as he was looking for his missing son under the rubble.
Near Gaza, ambulances and damaged fire trucks were parked, unable to operate.
Mahmoud Basal, the Civil Defense spokesman in Gaza, said that efforts to remove people from the rubble failed due to the lack of “necessary tools, vehicles and equipment”.
“We recognize the urgent need to work on the rescue of citizens here in the Gaza Strip and to support the Civil Defense with the tools, vehicles and equipment necessary to perform their humanitarian mission,” added Basal.
No new humanitarian supply has entered the Palestinian territory since Israel blocked the entry of aid trucks on March 2, as negotiations about the next phase of a truce, now broken, were paralyzed.
Israel resumed the military attack on March 18.
The country’s Foreign Ministry stated that 25,000 humanitarian assistance trucks entered Gaza on 42 days of ceasefire and that Hamas used help to rebuild their war machine, an allegation that the group denied.
“Israel’s defense forces (IDF) are acting according to the guidelines of the political summit. Israel is not transferring and will not transfer help to terrorist organizations,” said the Israeli army.
The war in Gaza was triggered by the Hamas attack south of Israel on October 7, 2023, in which 1,200 people were killed and 251 hostages, according to Israeli data.
Since then, more than 50,900 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive, local health officials.
Much of Gaza is in ruins and most of the population has been displaced.
