Amid the intensification of attacks nearby and little access to medicines, the Batista Al-Ahli Hospital, in Gaza Strip is caring for more than 500 patients – some seriously injured –, a doctor at the establishment told CNN .
According to Ghassan Abu-Sittah, professionals at the only functioning hospital in Gaza City are “simply overloaded and under-resourced”.
A CNN the doctor described a grim picture of conditions at the institution, which, according to him, has only two operating rooms, three surgeons and an extremely low supply of anesthetics to care for a growing number of injured people.
“Initially, we started receiving injuries from air strikes, but today we also received victims with injuries from snipers. We have more than 500 injured people in the hospital,” Abu-Sittah said.
“We perform daily procedures without anesthesia… We do not have access to operating rooms and we try to maintain them for the most critical procedures,” he added.
The doctor said the hospital has access to running water and food, which are brought by ambulances.
He also stated that although the hospital is not “physically surrounded,” he can “hear the building continually shake” from the closer attacks.
Earlier today, the United Nations reported that the hospital is the only medical facility capable of receiving patients among around 30 hospitals and clinics in the northern Gaza Strip.
