Gas pipe ruptures and man burns body in attempted robbery in RJ

A man was seriously injured after an attempted theft of a school's gas pipes in Bangu, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. The suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, was rescued with approximately 90% of his body burned after the pipe exploded.

According to the Military Police, agents from the 14th BPM (Bangu) were called on Wednesday night (27) to respond to an incident at the Integrated Public Education Center (Ciep) Professor Célia Martins Menna Barreto.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found the injured suspect and provided the necessary assistance. According to the Municipal Health Department, the man is hospitalized in serious condition at the Albert Schweitzer Municipal Hospital, in Realengo.

In a statement, the PM reported that the case was registered at the 34th DP and that the suspect remains in custody.

Contacted by CNN, Rio's Municipal Civil Defense reported that it was also called in the early hours of this Thursday (28) to find out whether the rest of the school was at risk of collapse after the explosion.

“Civil Defense technicians carried out an inspection and identified a collapse of walls and plaster lowering in the kitchen, pantry, dressing room and cafeteria. For this reason, it was necessary to carry out a preventive closure of the site. However, no imminent structural risk was detected,” the agency said.
