More than half of the waste produced in Brazil in large urban centers could generate electricity for about 100 million people, according to a survey carried out by the Brazilian Association for the Recovery of Energy from Waste (ABREN).
Currently, the first Energy Recovery Plant in the country is under construction, located in Barueri (SP).
According to the vice-president of ABREN, Flávio Matos, technology contributes directly to two factors: electricity generation and basic sanitation.
The Association also considers gains for public health, as the waste that would be sent to a dump or illegal sanitary landfill is now disposed of in an environmentally correct manner.
The study pointed out that, with about 56% of urban waste produced by the 28 metropolitan regions of Brazil with more than 1 million inhabitants, it is possible to generate electricity for 27 million homes in the country and supply an average of 100 million people.
According to the president of ABREN, Yuri Schmitke, energy recovery, which is the technology that transforms the non-recyclable fraction of waste into energy, is a practice used for about 50 years in Europe and Asia, for example, but in Brazil is coming now.
In addition to the URE (Energy Recovery Plant) in Barueri, scheduled to start operating in 2025, there are A-5 and A-6 New Energy Auctions scheduled to take place on September 16 of this year and will have a category dedicated exclusively to energy generation. from garbage, or municipal solid waste (MSW).
