G20 says it is committed to reforming and expanding the UN Security Council

The final declaration by the leaders of the G20 Summit held in Rio de Janeiro committed to reforming the Security Council of the United Nations (UN), promising to align the collegiate with the realities and demands of the 21st century. The document was released this Monday- fair (18).

This would make the council “more representative, inclusive, efficient, effective, democratic and accountable, and more transparent to the entire United Nations community, enabling a better distribution of responsibilities among all its members, while improving effectiveness and transparency of their working methods”.

An expanded composition of the Security Council is called for, to improve the representation of countries from Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Today, the permanent members of the collegiate are:

  • United States
  • Russia
  • France
  • United Kingdom
  • and China.

Every year, five non-permanent members are elected to the group, who serve a two-year term. However, only permanent countries have the right to veto any decision.
