The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, in charge of infrastructure, Mr. George Karagiannis, referred to all the interventions made in Evia with resources that the prefecture had not seen for decades, answering a relevant topical question in Parliament.
“We are moving forward with what they have been doing for years and we are implementing the largest program of projects. We are making interventions in Evia itself and directing resources that the prefecture had to see for decades,” said Mr. Karagiannis.
He made extensive reference to the project “Bypass of Chalkida and Psachna”, with a total budget of 210 million euros, which the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis managed to auction and in 2022 the first construction sites are expected to be erected.
Addressing SYRIZA, he noted that “for a project that you as a government categorically failed to auction for 4.5 years, we managed to bid and the tender process has already progressed and we will soon have the announcement of the temporary contractor.”
In fact, as the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure pointed out, the project has a lower cost by 40 million euros, from the budget for SYRIZA days.
“If the project went on the air during your days with the planning that had been done then by the Ministry, the cost would be at least 250 million euros,” he underlined.
Regarding the layout, he noted that “the project we auctioned, steps on the axis of the old study, with the uneven nodes that were provided and with the techniques as studied” and added that “it clearly bypasses both the city of Chalkida and the Psachna “.
The North Road Axis of Evia is progressing
According to Mr. Karagiannis, the intervention of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport with Costas Karamanlis, in the region is total and is not limited to the work of Chalkida.
He reminded that, a few months ago, the Prime Minister himself announced the Northern Road Axis of Evia. “We are talking about the substance of the Chalkida – Strofilia axis, which will start immediately after the end of the Psachna Bypass and with a course of about 25 kilometers ends south of Mantoudi,” he explained.
Informing about the course of this great project for the prefecture, he stated that “we have undertaken as a Ministry to mature it and we estimate that by the end of 2023 we will have in our hands the studies to be auctioned”.
“At the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, we prefer to talk about our projects. We are fully implementing our promises and in the coming years Evia will acquire the transport infrastructure that we promised and deserve,” he assured.

The goal for the region, as Mr. Karagiannis said, is to develop infrastructure “that will boost development and repair some of the wounds caused by last summer’s devastating fires.”
In closing, he stressed that “we must bend over the problems of Evia in order for the economy of the region to recover and life to return to normal.”
