G. Georgantas: Measures to alleviate farmers as needed

“The measures we announce aim to alleviate the increased production costs, for as long as required”, stressed the Minister of Rural Development and Food, George Georgantas during the meeting with the representatives of the coordinating Committee of the Panhellenic Blocs.

“Today, we continue to sensitively assist in announcing a new set of urgent initiatives and actions,” he said, adding: compensation for extreme weather events and fires as a result of the climate crisis “.

He noted that the ministry’s goal is for agricultural holdings to gain energy autonomy and announced that by the end of March there will be specific initiatives on this issue, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

He also added that in the next period the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure will “run” faster the European programs that are in progress, while he pledged to move quickly the issue regarding the revision of the ELGA regulation. On this issue, Mr. Georgantas stressed that consultations will begin in April.

On his part, the Minister of Environment Costas Skrekas noted that depending on the conditions between Ukraine – Russia, the goal is to cover the 80% adjustment clause in the agricultural current from April and after the beginning of the growing season in our country.

He expressed the commitment of the government that “it will spend the last euro to support the Greek farmer”, acknowledging that at this stage the support of the farmer towards accuracy is subsidies.

He noted that RIS in collaboration with the Ministry of Regional Development and HEDNO and HEDNO will announce an additional energy margin for farmers and in saturated prefectures a special subsidy program.

Finally, he referred to long-term policies related to infrastructure, such as the irrigation networks that have been announced in the program “YDOR 2.0” with a total budget of 1.6 billion euros.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, the Deputy Minister of Finance, Apostolos Vesyropoulos, the Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food, George Stylios and officials of the Ministry of Regional Development.

“None of our basic requests were met”

“The government did not satisfy any of our basic demands, demands that put us on the road,” said after the end of the wide meeting the president of the Union Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Larissa, Rizos Maroudas, announcing the continuation of the mobilizations. As he said “the 50 million euros that the â…“ of farmers would receive as a refund of the Special Consumption Tax on oil, becomes 60 million euros for all farmers” which as he stated “corresponds to 181.3 euros per farmer”.

Mr. Maroudas finally noted that “the struggle will be continuous and the participation must be massive. We continue because this battle is a battle for production” adding that “the increase in production costs for farmers will fatally lead to an increase in prices for the consumer “.
