Fyre Fest’s second attempt will apparently have to wait a little longer, as the festival organizers say it will no longer be performed in Playa del Carmen.
The festival was scheduled to start on May 30 at the Mexican tourist site, but prosecutor Billy McFarland told NBC News on Wednesday that it is still undefined if the festival will take place next month, as it depends on finding a new location.
Tickets on the Fyre Fest 2 official website are currently unavailable for purchase. Sales started in February.
“The Fyre Festival 2 is still confirmed,” the organizers said in a statement to tickets on Wednesday, according to NBC. “We are evaluating new places and we will announce our destination soon. Our priorities remain unchanged: providing an unforgettable, safe and transparent experience.”
THE CNN contacted Fyre Fest 2 to comment.
The news that the festival is being postponed because of the location comes after authorities from Playa del Carmen released a statement earlier this month contesting that Fyre Fest would be held in the city.
“Playa del Carmen’s municipal government reports that no event with this name will be held in our city,” said a translated version of the statement, originally published in Spanish on the official Playa del Carmen government page on Instagram. “After a responsible analysis of the situation, it is confirmed that there are no records, plans or conditions that indicate the holding of such an event in the municipality.”
Two days later, McFarland published a statement contesting Playa del Carmen’s government statement, stating that he and the festival organizers have “worked directly with the government of Playa del Carmen (PDC) and its employees” since March to ensure a safe event.
THE CNN He tried to contact Playa del Carmen’s government officials for more comments.
McFarland announced Fyre Fest 2 in February, describing it as a “three-day escape to the Mexican Caribbean, where you will explore during the day next to your favorite talents and gather at night to celebrate with music” in a statement published on your X page. Artists had not yet been announced.
McFarland is the founder of the 2017 original Fyre Festival, which has gained popularity after being strongly promoted on social networks by influencers and celebrities before unfolding disastrously with precarious accommodation, disorganization and cheese sandwiches.
In 2018, McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison after being guilty of charges of electronic fraud, bank fraud and make false statements for the application of federal law, he confirmed to CNN The US Attorney’s office for the southern district of New York at the time.
McFarland was released from prison in 2022 after serving nearly four years of his six -year sentence.
