Fundraising to treat son of indigenous man Bruno Pereira reaches goal of R$ 2 million

The donation made to raise funds for the treatment of the son of indigenous man Bruno Pereira reached the goal of R$ 2 million. Bruno Pereira, considered one of the greatest experts on isolated peoples in the country, was murdered in June 2022 in Vale do Javari, in Amazonas. At the time, he was on an expedition with the English journalist Dom Phillips, who was also killed.

Anthropologist Beatriz de Almeida Matos created a virtual crowdfunding to assist in the treatment of her son Pedro, aged 5, diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a type of cancer considered very aggressive.

The goal was to reach R$2 million. Until the 2nd night of this Sunday (7), around R$ 2.03 million had been raised. In total, more than 25,700 donations were registered on the Vakinha fundraising platform. Help can be provided via the link www.salvepedro.com, which is still active.

“After 5 months of chemotherapy in a public hospital, Pedro’s fight is to stop the cancer from spreading. This can only be avoided with a very expensive medicine (betadinutuximab), which has to be imported and is not offered by the SUS”, explained Beatriz, in the description of the crowdfunding.

Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that almost always affects children up to 5 years of age. Most neuroblastomas develop in the adrenal glands (near the kidneys), but they can affect other organs. In stage 4, the disease has already reached the lymph nodes.

“Pedro is the son of Bruno Pereira, one of the most combative indigenous people in Brazil, cowardly murdered in June 2022. A crime that moved the world and outraged the country. Bruno dedicated his life to the Amazon. He denounced illegal mining and predatory fishing. He fought deforestation and land grabbing. He faced the invaders of the protected areas. He fought for indigenous people. He defended the forest, our future, the future of our children. Now, the battle of Pedro, the son of Bruno and anthropologist Beatriz de Almeida Matos, is for his life”, wrote Beatriz.

“Let’s save Pedro. Get in this kitty. Collaborate however you can. Pedro is Bruno’s son. Pedro is Beatriz’s son. Pedro is our son. He is a son of Brazil. Hail Pedro”, added the anthropologist.
