Bahamian police have arrested former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, the country’s attorney general said on Monday, adding that the Bahamas has received formal notice from the United States of criminal charges against him.
A spokesman for the US Attorney’s office in Manhattan confirmed that Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas, but declined to comment on what the charges were.
“As a result of the notification received and the accompanying material, it was deemed opportune for the Attorney General of the Republic to request the arrest of SBF and keep him in custody under the terms of the article referring to the Extradition Law of our country”, said the office of the Attorney General of the Bahamas, Ryan Pinder.
A lawyer for Bankman-Fried could not immediately be reached for comment.
In a series of interviews and public appearances in late November and December, Bankman-Fried acknowledged risk management flaws but sought to distance himself from fraud allegations, saying he never knowingly mixed client funds at FTX with funds at his private equity firm. proprietary trading company, Alameda Research.
