Ceremonies and burial
On Saturday, April 26, at 10am local time, 5am in Brasilia, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the Cardinal College, will celebrate the Mass of Exequias (ceremony for deceased Catholics), marking the first day of Noveli (novenary), the nine days of mourning and prayers in honor of the Pope, in St. Peter’s Square, in front of the Basilica of St. Peter, the main Vatican.
At the end of the ceremony, the rites of the Last commendatio and from Valet They will be celebrated – the farewells that mark the end of the foster.
Then, Francis’ coffin will be taken back into the basilica and will be transferred to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where the burial ceremony will be held.
Lopid
In his final will, Pope Francis asked him to be buried in a simple grave, excavated on the ground, without decoration and only with the inscription “Franciscus”.
The Pontiff chose the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore going on the opposite way to the predecessors who are mostly in the Basilica of St. Peter.
“Feeling that the end of my earthly life approaches and with alive hope in eternal life, I want to express my will only with the place of my burial. I have always trusted my life and my priestly and episcopal ministry to the mother of our Lord, Santa Maria. Therefore, I ask my remains to rest waiting for the day of resurrection in the papal basil of St. Maria Maggiore,” he expressed in 2022 and signed in 2022 and released by the Holy See on Monday (21).
