French senator in custody – He was accused of drugging a member of parliament to rape her

A French senator was detained today in Paris, as well he allegedly drugged a member of parliament in order to sexually assault her, Agence France-Presse reported, citing a source with knowledge of the case and confirming an information from the RMC website.

THE The prosecutor’s office confirmed that Joel Gerio was taken into custody on suspicion of unknowingly administering to a woman a substance capable of “impairing her judgment or causing her to lose control of her actions in order to commit rape or sexual assault.”

The victim filed suit stating that she was administered the substance on the night of Tuesday into Wednesday.

The 66-year-old Geriot, a banker by profession, has been elected to the French Senate since 2011. He is currently secretary of the Senate and vice-president of the Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed Forces Committee. He is elected in the Loire-Atlantique region of western France and is a member of the centre-right Independents group.

Two sources said the victim is a lawmaker, but prosecutors have not released any details on her identity.

The woman felt unwell after having a drink on Tuesday night into Wednesday at his home senatorwith whom he was not having an affair. He was tested and found to have consumed “ecstasy”.

Gerio was arrested today and taken into custody. According to the RMC and as relayed by the Athens News Agency, searches were carried out in his office and his home where this narcotic substance was found.
