French President Emmanuel Macron called Elon Musk relaxing content moderation policies on Twitter “a big problem”.
The French president gave an interview this Thursday (1st) to the television program Good Morning America.
Musk’s social media platform decided earlier this week to reverse a policy aimed at combating Covid-19-related misinformation.
Since buying Twitter in October for $44 billion, the world’s richest man has also reinstated some previously blocked accounts, including that of Donald Trump.
Last week, Musk said the platform will provide a “general amnesty” for some suspended accounts.
“Freedom of expression and democracy are based on respect and public order. You can speak out, you can have freedom of expression, you can write whatever you want, but there are responsibilities and limits,” Macron said in the interview, adding that he was in favor of more regulation.
Twitter and Musk did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.
Musk said last month that Twitter was experiencing a “massive drop in revenue” because of a decision by advertisers to suspend advertising on the social network.
Civil rights groups have been campaigning for companies to stop advertising on Twitter since Musk took control of the social network and began promoting changes to the content moderation policy.
