French authorities investigate death threats against Opening Ceremony director

French authorities have launched an investigation into death threats and cyber-harassment targeting the artistic director of the 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony Toa Jolie, the Paris Prosecutor’s Office announced today. Jolie filed a complaint after threats and online attacks over the performance – part of the unprecedented Opening Ceremony on the River Seine – that appeared to parody Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper. The scene, which sparked outrage from top leaders, the Catholic Church and far-right politicians in France, featured drag queens, a transgender model and the nearly naked Greek ancient god Dionysus. Paris 2024 organizers later apologized saying there was no intention to disrespect any religious group.
