Freezing rain, frost and subtropical cyclone; see how the weather is in Brazil

Despite just over a month to winter in Brazil, the country will face a week with intense cold, strong wind, snow and frost. On Monday (16), a subtropical cyclone advanced near the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, intensifying the winds in the south and east of the state.

Wind gusts should exceed 100 km/h in some locations in the extreme south of Rio Grande do Sul.

As a result, the formation and displacement of a cold front, which is polar in origin, and driven by the cyclone, will favor the occurrence of heavy rains and low temperatures in several states, such as Mato Grosso do Sul, southern Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais. , São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Temperatures in Brazil

This Tuesday (17), early in the morning, the forecast is for frost to form in the north of Santa Catarina, in much of the state of Paraná and in the south and southwest of Mato Grosso do Sul. The frost may be strong in central and southern Paraná.

During the day, the capital of São Paulo has a forecast of isolated rain at dawn. The weather should stabilize throughout the day. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), the minimum temperature in São Paulo should be 11ºC this Tuesday. The maximum should reach 19ºC. The day should be accompanied by rain showers from the afternoon of moderate intensity.

The cold should be even more intense on Wednesday (18), with the thermometers marking a minimum of 6ºC and the maximum should not exceed 15ºC.

With regard to snow in the country, the highest probability is that the event will take place between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning over the southern and northern plateaus of the state, in addition to the Serra Gaúcha, according to Inmet.

Frost

Also according to Inmet, the tendency is that there are favorable conditions for the formation of frost in the South Region in the period between this Tuesday and the 22nd. south of Minas Gerais.

polar front

A polar air front is a transition zone or surface of contact between two air masses of different densities — one cold and one warm. In short, fronts are the ‘boundaries’ between polar air masses and tropical air masses.

All these drops in temperatures in Brazil will be driven by a polar front and amplified by the extratropical cyclone that will hit the south of the country — due to the strong gusts of wind throughout the day, the feeling of cold can be even greater.

freezing rain

Added together, these conditions can contribute to ‘freezing rain’ in the south of the country. The event is rare in Brazil and occurs when a cold front meets a warm front. In freezing rain, liquid water falls and freezes when it touches some surface.
