32 years ago, Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen and one of the greatest singers of all time, died. To remember the artist, a fan club released his last images before he died. According to Jim Hutton, the singer’s partner at the time, he was already downcast, despite smiling for the camera.
The photos were taken by Hutton at One Garden Lodge, the singer’s garden in West Kesington, London. Next to one of her cats, the star appears smiling and not too close to the camera. The records took place three months before Freddie’s death.
In his book, entitled “Mercury and Me”, Jim Hutton tells a little behind the scenes of Freddie’s latest photos.
“That summer, Freddie posed for a camera for the last time – mine,” Jim said. “It happened like this: I was in the garden photographing some flowers in full bloom and Freddie walked towards me. I pointed the lens – he wanted to step back a little so he wasn’t so close to the camera,” he added.
Jim claims these are his favorite photos of Mercury.
“He was so pale and haggard that I knew he didn’t look his best, but it didn’t matter in the slightest; Of all the photos I have of Freddie, these are the ones I love the most,” he wrote.
Freddie Mercury died on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45, as a result of AIDS, a disease caused by the HIV virus. He had been living with the condition for at least four years and, despite strong suspicions from the press and fans about his health, the singer only publicly acknowledged the fact on the eve of his death.
The singer, pianist and composer left the world a legacy of 186 songs, spread across more than two thousand recordings.
