A big bang. Then the desperation of two parents who tried in every way to save their 5-year-old daughter but failed. It happened near Caselle on Saturday, when a plane Frecce Tricolori crashed to the ground due to an engine problem. The shrapnel from the burning aircraft hit the Ford Fiesta in which Laura was traveling with her family, her mother Veronica Vernetto, 41 years old, her father Paolo Origliasso, 49, and her older brother, 12 years old. They were returning home, to San Francesco al Campo, not far from the Caselle airport runway.
«I heard a bang and the house shook. The parents were crying. They were desperate because they hadn’t managed to recover the little girl.”a witness told the Corriere della Sera. «We couldn’t do anything, there were flames everywhere. From the runway the firefighters tried to throw water on this side, over the fence but there was nothing they could do.” The parents, with burns caused by the desperate attempt to save their daughter, were hospitalized in the Città della Salute in Turin. The eldest child is hospitalized in intensive care at the Regina Margherita children’s hospital, with second degree burns on 15 percent of his body.
«The father is very upset, he is in shock, keep thinking about the little girl, he only said that he heard a big noise, he didn’t say anything more”, communicated Giovanni La Valle, health director of the City of Health of Turin, who visited Veronica Vernetto, mathematics and science teacher and Paolo Origliasso, metalworker. Today Laura’s dad was discharged and he continues to wonder what more she could have done. «What could I have done differently? Where did I go wrong?”he repeated to the doctors who assisted him.
“From a medical point of view, the parents’ situation is calm,” he explained to the Courier Maurizio Berardino, director of intensive care. «The burns that were caused during the extraction of the children are second degree, while the mother will still be hospitalized because she has burns on a larger surface of her body».
The dynamics of the accident are still to be clarified. The hypotheses are: impact with a flock of birds or mechanical failure. What happened is that shortly after takeoff, the pilot warned that he had an engine problem, lost control of the aircraft and activated the ejection device from the cabin. Turin airport will remain closed until midnight today.
