France: One migrant dies and another is missing in the English Channel

A migrant died, another is missing and more than 400 were rescued off the French coast today after the wreckage of several boats trying to cross the English Channel to reach Britain, became known to local authorities.

“More than 400 people were rescued (…) Unfortunately, despite the means at our disposal, eone person is ignored and another is deadSaid the French Port Authority for the Channel and the North Sea.

The man who died “is an adult, estimated to be about 30 years old”. According to the first data of the investigation, there were “about 40 people” on board the boat, said Sebastien Piev, prosecutor of Dunkirk.

Immigrant rescue operations have increased in recent days in the English Channel. Today, many ships of the French Navy, the port and two helicopters of the French and Belgian armies had to intervene.

“There has been a lot of activity this week,” perhaps because of “the relatively mild meteorological conditions,” Piev said.

On Monday night, according to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency, 292 migrants were rescued during seven different operations.

According to port chief Philippe Dutrier, about 15,400 migrants have attempted to cross the English Channel from January 1st to August 31st, of whom 3,500 were “rescued after being endangered” at sea and taken to the French coast.

In 2020, about 9,500 people tried or managed to cross the Channel, compared to 2,300 in 2019 and 600 in 2018.
