France, comes the law to limit access to porn for minors

The French government is ready to announce a system, which has been under study for months, for prevent minors under 18 from accessing pornographic content on the internet. The new porn law would go into effect in September. The objective of French politics for many years has been to defend children from accessing pornographic images, something that already happens at the age of 13 and with first accesses at 11 according to reports from the website of Le Parisien. Billie Eilish also told it, showing that it is not just a French phenomenon.

The new system should certify the age of those who consult pornographic sites. This was announced by Minister of Digital Transition Jean-Noël Barrot: «Pornographic sites will have to comply with the law which obliges them to really check the age of their users, otherwise we will ban the diffusion on the national territory. 2023 will mark the end of access to porn sites for our children.

The model is that of app, for example banks, which verify the user’s identity with a password and use identification systems such as Spid. The application will act as an intermediary between the user and the site. No personal information will be exchanged, but will provide proof of certified age. The service that provides proof of age will not know which site you are using it for, and the site will not find out who you are.

Certainly a deeper scrutiny than the current requirement to declare being over 18. Similar to many other sites and situations that could benefit from the new system. Minister Barrot said: “There are many age limits that are not respected enough on the Internet, for example by sites that sell alcohol or by social media: you can only register from the age of 13 and with the consent of a parent, but it is a condition often circumvented ».

Not everyone is convinced that the system can work. On the internet there are alternatives to sites like YouPorn or PornHub: young people could go to pages that do not comply with the controls. Then there is porn content freely accessible on Twitter and other social media open to minors. For children it is not difficult to use VPN services, to simulate a connection from abroad or use passwords and registrations of adults at home.
