More than 100 celebrities have signed an open letter denouncing what they describe as homophobic comments by a French government minister.
Caroline Caillet, recently appointed Minister of Territorial Cohesion in the new government formed on July 4, was asked by the Senate on Tuesday whether she remains opposed to the law on same-sex marriage and child adoption, as she said in 2013. She at the time he called the reform “capricious” and “a scheme opposed to nature”.
Caillet initially stood by what she had said, adding: “I have many friends among these people.” Two days later she apologized for her comment.
The open letter will be published tomorrow in the Journal du Dimanche. The signatories point to her choice of words and question whether she should retain her position.
“How can we accept that a member of the government (…) calls French citizens ‘those people’? How can we get over the fact that, in her mind, they do not belong to the same category of citizens?”.
The letter is signed by MPs, mayors, former ministers, including former Prime Minister Manuel Valls, as well as journalists, lawyers and other members of civil society.
On Friday, Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne said Kaye had made “shocking” statements in the past and given a clumsy explanation, but she should continue her work and remain “focused on her mission” in government.
