Former President of Peru Alberto Fujimori reveals cancer diagnosis

The former president of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, aged 85, revealed that he had been diagnosed with a malignant tumor on the tongue, where he has had a cancerous lesion for more than 27 years. The announcement was made through a video published on the social network X.

The former leader lamented, saying: “Just now that I have regained my freedom, I have to face a new battle.” He experienced several health problems during the time he was in prison.

Also according to the video, Fujimori will begin treatment against the disease, alongside his family. “Apart from medicine, my best treatment is the love of my children and grandchildren,” he added.

“I never surrender to illness and arbitrariness. Nothing can prevent my reunion with all of you. With your support, God’s help, and the love of my family, I will defeat cancer.” Also completing with a request for prayers.

Released since December

The former Peruvian president was released in December last year while serving a 25-year sentence for human rights violations.

He was convicted in 2009 of ordering the massacre of 25 people in 1991 and 1992, when his government was fighting Shining Path.

But he was pardoned on Christmas Eve 2017 by the president at the time, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. Alberto Fujimori was free for around nine months before a court declared it null and void.

Since then, the pardon has been repeatedly annulled or suspended by lower courts following pressure from the Inter-American Court and victims' families.
