Former Peru-First Lady arrives in Brazil this Wednesday after receiving asylum

Former Peru’s first lady, Nadine Heredia, is expected to land in Brazil on Wednesday (16), on a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) plane.

According to sources from the Itamaraty Palace and the defense of Heredia, the flight is expected to reach the Brasilia Air Base around 12h.

The wife of former Peruvian president Ollanta Humala, Nadine requested and received a diplomatic asylum from Brazil, on Tuesday (15), a few hours after Peru’s court condemning the couple to 15 years in prison for money laundering from contractor Odebrecht, received illicitly for election campaigns.

Nadine travels to Brazil accompanied by Samin Mallko Ollanta Humala Heredia, the couple’s youngest son, who also received asylum.

Leonardo Massud, Brazilian lawyer at Massud, Sarcedo and Andrade, who collaborates with the defense of former Peruvian president, told CNN that the FAB aircraft made a stop in Cuiabá for refueling and went to Brasilia.

The defense added that the FAB plane was used because, despite the authorization to leave Peru, “for safety reasons, it would be complicated that she can wear a career plane.”

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Heredia entered the Brazilian embassy in Lima shortly after the sentence, seeking diplomatic protection. The magistrate Nayko Coronado Salazar, responsible for the trial, had issued immediate arrest warrants after the court’s decision.

After the Brazilian government communicated to the Peruvian Chancellery that the diplomatic asylum was granted, Peruvian President Dina Boluarte granted the safe conduct on Tuesday night to allow heredia and his son to leave the country.

Humala and his wife were accused of receiving funds from Odebrecht, now known as Novoonor, in his successful 2011 election campaign. The court also points out that both received money from the Venezuelan government, which was at the time commanded by Hugo Chavez.

Heredia denied the accusations of receiving resources from the Government of Chavez and any Brazilian company.

The case is part of a broader corruption scandal involving several Peruvian leaders.

The Peruvian government said it was “in constant communication on this situation” with the Brazilian government.

Most recent condemnation of the “Lava Jato”

Old Construction Giant, Odebrecht admitted to having paid bribes to governments of all Latin America to help build its vast empire. The company changed its name to Novoonor in 2020 and is currently in the process of bankruptcy.

Humala is the second former president of Peru to be arrested and the fourth to be implied for his role in the comprehensive case of corruption known as “Lava Jato”.

In 2019, former President Alan Garcia killed himself with a shot when police went to his home to arrest him for alleged corruption related to the company.

The year before, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (PPK) was forced to resign after only two years in office. Meanwhile, Toledo was sentenced to two decades of arrest last year after receiving $ 35 million in bribes in exchange for public works contracts.

Former Odebrecht executives said in a Peruvian court that the company funded almost all presidential candidates in the country for almost 30 years.
