Former Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy has died

David Levy, a Moroccan-born Israeli politician who fought tirelessly against entrenched racism against North African Jews and went on to serve as foreign minister and hold other senior government posts, has died aged 86. Levy moved to Israel at the age of 20 from Morocco. He first worked in construction and entered politics as a representative of the construction union. He served in the Knesset, or parliament, from 1969 to 2006, holding the positions of foreign minister, deputy prime minister, and housing and construction minister at various times. At the height of his career he was a rival in the Likud party of the current Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel's early leaders had a paternalistic attitude toward Jewish immigrants from the Arabic-speaking countries of the Middle East and North Africa.
