Former deputy George Santos was sentenced on Friday (25) to more than seven years in prison for theft of qualified identity and electronic fraud, resulting from fraudulent activities during an election campaign of a mandate of 2022.
The judge decided that he should surrender until July 25.
The sentence represents a defeat for the former Republican deputy of New York, who declared himself guilty in August.
At the time, he was also ordered to pay a refund of $ 373,000 as part of an agreement.
The Justice Department requested a prison sentence over seven years to Santos, while he requested the court a minimum penalty of two years.
Santos, who represented parts of Long Island and Queens during his brief and scandalous mandate in Congress, was expelled from the House in late 2023, after the House Ethics Committee released a report on “illegal conduct and without accusation” of Santos.
