Former councilor Jerominho dies in Rio de Janeiro

Former Rio de Janeiro councilor Jerônimo Guimarães Filho, known as Jerominho, died this Thursday afternoon (4th), after being shot in front of a family social center in Campo Grande, in the west of Rio de Janeiro.

According to the Civil Police, he was shot twice with a rifle. One hit the belly and one the leg, according to police. He was accompanied by his brother-in-law, who was also shot.

According to witnesses, occupants of a vehicle would have fired in the direction of Jerominho, who was close to the social center.

The ex-politician was rescued and taken to the Oeste D’or hospital, but he did not survive his injuries. The death was confirmed by the family’s lawyer.

The Military Police reported that policing was intensified in the region, the former parliamentarian’s electoral stronghold.

Former Rio councilor and retired civil police officer, Jerominho is named as the founder of the largest militia faction in the city, the Justice League. He was one of those indicted in the CPI das Milícias, which ended in 2008, but he was arrested a year earlier and served more than a decade with his brother and former state deputy José Guimarães Natalino.
