Foreigners fighting for Ukraine will be eligible for citizenship of the country

Ukraine’s Deputy Interior Minister Yevhen Yenin declared on Tuesday that foreigners who volunteer to fight for the country will be eligible for local citizenship, according to the Ukrainian National News Agency, Ukrinform.

“Ukraine is forming an International Territorial Defense Legion made up of foreigners who want to join the resistance against Russian aggressors and defend global security,” Ukrinform reported, quoting Yenin.

Yenin said the number of foreign volunteers is growing.

“These people will sign a contract, receive a military passport, which will then replace their residence permit.” In the future, if any of these foreigners want to become a Ukrainian citizen, our legislation offers a way to do so,” he said, according to Ukrinform.

Last Thursday (3), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that the first 16,000 foreign fighters were heading to the country to join the fight against Russia.

THE CNN could not confirm these numbers. Ukrainian embassies have helped recruit foreign fighters, some without any military training.
