Data collected by the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC) show the resumption of the flow of international tourism with the improvement of the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the entity, based on figures from the Central Bank (BC), from January to July this year, Brazilians spent US$ 7 billion on trips abroad, while foreigners who visited Brazil left US$ 2.7 billion in the country, the best results since 2019, considering the same period.
CNC economist, Fábio Bentes points out that the numbers are important to demonstrate the recovery of tourism. In August alone, the sector totaled BRL 34.2 billion in revenue, an increase of more than 20% compared to last year, already discounting inflation, and the best level for the month since 2016.
“We have several factors that explain this growth. One is the rescue in relation to the pre-pandemic period, the other is the pent-up demand. In addition, service sector inflation has already begun to subside. In the 12-month period, it is at 8.5%, below the IPCA”, said Bentes.
August was also another month of positive balance in formal job vacancies created by tourism, with 23,300, a scenario observed since May 2021, in a search for jobs closed in the first months of the pandemic.
CNC expects that, between September and December of this year, tourism will open another 158,600 vacancies, closing the year 2022 with a balance of 309,300, eliminating the deficit caused by Covid-19. According to Bentes, hiring should come from the cultural segment, such as theaters and cinemas, in addition to lodging and food.
If the sector has already reached the pre-pandemic level and evaluates good results this year, Bentes warns that it may suffer a slowdown at the end of the year.
The economist recalls that three essential products for the business had readjustments above inflation: airfare, accommodation and tourist package, up 75%, 22% and 23%, respectively, in the comparison between August this year and 2021.
“Why above average? It could be an effect of pent-up demand and entrepreneurs trying to rebuild some of their profit margin. The interest rate is also important as all of this is usually financed by the consumer. And interest rates are at the highest level since April 2018,” he added.
