This is not a revisited and correct geography or even a fake of the football calendar, but a choice – attention: a political choice – made by FIFA also (and not only) in view of the World Cup in Qatar. Well: the Qatar national football team has been included in a European grouping – Group A – in order to be able to better prepare for the World Cup that he will play as a host. Obviously from outside the standings, given that Qatar is already qualified as an organizing country by right.
The other teams in Group A are Portugal, Ireland, Azerbaijan and Serbia. In the first match / friendly, Qatar beat Luxembourg 1-0. He will play all his matches in Debrecen, Hungary, welcomed with open arms by his friend Orban, who couldn’t wait to open the borders for the emirs. The question – as they say – arises spontaneously: what is Qatar doing in Europe? Such a thing had never been seen before. At least in Europe. Because – actually – Qatar has already participated in the 2019 Copa America and will be invited again this year. Power of money.
Qatar in Europe woke up immediately scandal. The local federation makes it known that being able to “train” in Europe will benefit a national team that occupies the 55th place in the FIFA ranking and that has been built at a table: challenging the European teams will increase the level of competition of the players of Qatar, many of the which naturalized (Algerians, Ghanaians, Brazilians, Spaniards like the coach, Felix Sachez Bas). After all, the Qatar Stars League – the local league – was also contracted by foreigners: there is only one Qatari coach out of 12.
The real problems, however, are not those of the field. The issue that is at stake is that of humanitarian rights. Denied in a country where – as per the recent investigation of Guardian – over six thousand workers died during the construction of the stadiums. The situation in Qatar – 2.3 million inhabitants, like Milan and Naples together – is very worrying. The rights of migrants (who make up 90% of the workforce) are null, women continue to be discriminated against, the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders are trampled on, freedom of expression is limited in both law and practice, the authorities continue to have extended powers of surveillance over citizens by any means, imprisonment is foreseen for anyone managing a website that endangers the security of the state with incorrect news.

The world of football – in its vast majority – looks, is silent and turns away. The positions taken are very rare. Norway took the field with a shirt of denunciation against the violation of human rights, as did Germany. The World Cup in Qatar 2022 is too big a deal for anyone to crack the money machine that is in action.
