The Dr. Miguel Riet Corrêa Jr. University Hospital, of the Federal University of Rio Grande (Furg), announced this Friday (17) that it will not receive new patients and will need to transfer those currently hospitalized, gradually, to other units. The measure was taken amid the historic floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul.
Located near Lagoa dos Patos, the hospital is in an area considered at risk in the city and has already had part of its structure invaded by water. According to the latest update from Rio Grande City Hall, Lagoa dos Patos was 2.54 meters high this Friday morning (17), 64 centimeters above the level of the pier. Around 750 people are in city hall shelters.
According to the superintendent of HU-Furg, Sandra Brandão, even with all the preventive measures adopted, the decision to transfer the patients was mainly due to the possibility of turning off the electricity in the region.
According to the Brazilian Hospital Services Company (Ebserh), responsible for the hospital, transfers will begin with patients admitted to intensive care units, with those on mechanical ventilation being removed first. Subsequently, there will be patients with high dependence and, finally, those with greater autonomy.
Patients must be transferred to hospitals in the southern region of the state.
The HU-Furg University Hospital is a reference in high-risk maternity hospitals for the lagoon coast region of Rio Grande do Sul. With the new scenario, the reference becomes the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Pelotas (HE-UFPel) and the Santa Casa de Caridade de Bagé.
