Floods in RS: channel reaches record level of 3 meters in Pelotas

In Pelotas, in Rio Grande do Sul, the São Gonçalo channel reached the unprecedented level of 3 meters above normal, passing to a risky situation . Faced with this critical scenario, local authorities issued a high alert, advising residents of areas considered high risk to leave their homes immediately.

The record level was recorded in the early hours of Thursday (16/05), when there was a rapid increase in the volume of water in Lagoa dos Patos and the São Gonçalo canal. Although the level stabilized this Friday (17/05), it remains around 2.94 meters above normal.

Constant monitoring

The situation requires continued attention, as weather conditions can cause sudden new elevations. Patrícia warned that, despite the sun during the day, the situation is unstable and could worsen at night. In the coming days, the level is expected to remain high due to the influx of water from the Guaíba River, which should take around eight days to reach the region.

The authorities reinforced the request that residents of risk areas follow the guidelines and leave their homes. Mayor Paula Mascarenhas highlighted the importance of following the recommendations of emergency teams to guarantee the safety of the population.

Meanwhile, teams from SANEP, responsible for the municipality's water supply and sewage, are working to seal cracks in the containment dike, through which water has been leaking. They will carry out an unprecedented procedure with divers to try to contain the leaks. The public is advised to avoid these areas so as not to disrupt ongoing work.
