After the death of nine civil firefighters buried after the collapse in a cave in Altinópolis, in the interior of São Paulo, the Major of the Fire Department, Rodrigo Leal, said that the professionals, who were undergoing training, would sleep there. He detailed how the rescue work was carried out inside the cave.
“From what happened there, they were going to sleep in the cave. There were 28 [pessoas] at the site and ten remained due to the collapse. We moved from Ribeirão Preto and started the service”, said the major. All victims have been located.
According to Leal, it was necessary to dig to locate possible “pockets” of air and survivors. The location still offered a risk to the rescue team due to the weather conditions. For the major, it was not appropriate to carry out training in the cave in the face of the rain that hit the region.
“It is not appropriate to do training in that weather condition. [Havia] a lot of rain in the place that may have contributed to the collapse of part of the cave”, he said.
About 30 military firefighters acted in the rescue this Sunday (31) and the expertise, carried out by the Civil Police, should point out the causes of the collapse in the place.
“The military firefighters were called and the expert will better point out what happened there. We work with 30 firefighters in the cave and support personnel”, reported the major.
