Firefighter who worked in Brumadinho travels to Turkey to support earthquake rescues

The United Nations (UN) continues to mobilize and provide assistance after the strong earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday (6). At least 11,104 people died in both countries after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the United Nations was “fully committed to supporting the response” in the affected areas. According to him, the UN is counting on the international community to help the thousands affected by the disaster.

Humus Brasil, an association that operates in communities in areas at risk of disasters related to extreme natural events, sent a team specialized in search and rescue to Turkey, in response to a UN request.

The team includes the participation of firefighter Léo Farah, who helped rescue victims of the collapse of the Vale dam in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais.

“Almost 24 hours without sleep, with a single purpose to SAVE. I thank God for taking care of my family who are under his protection so that I can be used as an instrument of your will. May he enlighten us, may he keep us, may he protect us. I know it won’t be easy, but with the help of each one of you, we will make a difference”, said Farah in a post on Instagram.

According to Humus Brasil, the group sent is reduced due to restrictions on flights, access and resources, but it has high efficiency and capacity for rescues. The expected arrival time in the area most affected by the earthquake is this Wednesday (8).
