Finland: “Yes” from the parliament to the proposal to build a fence on the border with Russia

The proposal for the construction fence in part of borders Finland-Russia was on Tuesday (18/10) widely accepted by the parties in the Finnish parliament.

Prime Minister Sanna Marin called for a plenary session to discuss the proposal for the fence, the construction of which is estimated to take up to four years. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Finnish prime minister said the government would advance the construction of the project in the autumn supplementary budget, with the cost for the first year’s work estimated at 140 million euros.

The Finnish–Russian land border stretches for approximately 1,300 km, but the fence will cover about 300 kilometers. Currently, there are only a few small fences at various points along the border between the two countries to prevent cattle from crossing.
