Find out who the drug dealer is suspected of extorting a construction company in Rio

Appointed by the police as responsible for extorting a company that is building a public park in the North of Rio, Jean Carlos Nascimento dos Santos, Jean do 18, has an extensive criminal record, which includes an invasion of the Bangu forum in 2013, and the murder of his own lawyer. He's on the run.

On Thursday (11), the Police Station for the Repression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Inquiries (Draco) reported that the drug trafficker was identified by the investigation, based on statements collected by the specialist and the mapping of criminal organizations operating in the region.

“The prompt response was possible due to monitoring work carried out by both this specialist and the Civil Police. That’s why intelligence work is so important”, highlighted Carolina Cavalcante, Draco delegate.

In 2013, Jean do 18 ordered an invasion of the Bangu Forum, in the west of the city, to rescue accomplices who were giving statements. In the action, a child and a military police officer died.

According to investigations, in 2015 the drug trafficker ordered the death of his own lawyer, Roberto Rodrigues, after the defender was unable to free two accomplices who were imprisoned. The victim disappeared after meeting Jean from 18. In 2016, the Whereabouts Discovery Department (DDPA) indicted Jean for the crime.

Sentenced to more than 60 years in prison, the head of Morro do 18 escaped with two accomplices from the Gericinó Penitentiary Complex, in January 2023. The prisoners climbed the penitentiary wall using a rope made of sheets (popularly called teresa).

Back on the streets, the convict once again appeared on the police pages after the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes (PSD), this week denounced the charge of R$500,000 to the construction company that is building Parque Piedade. The work is budgeted at R$65 million and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

According to delegate Carolina Cavalcante, responsible for investigations at Draco, Jean and three other accomplices went to the construction site, armed, and threatened to stop the construction if the bribe was not paid.

“At this moment, we can place militia and drug trafficking on the same level of crime. Over time, traffickers migrated their original activities to seek sources of profit in other types of crimes, as we can see now in this case of Jean do 18, who makes a charge that has always been something typical of the militia, imposing fear to extort businesspeople”, explains the delegate.
