Suzane von Richthofen was convicted of the murder of her parents in 2002, with a fixed sentence of 39 years in prison. However, this Wednesday (11), she was transferred to the open regime by decision of Justice.

Previously, a request for regime change had been denied, remaining semi-open. The detention was carried out in jail in the interior of São Paulo.

See below for more information.

Who is Suzane von Richthofen

Suzane von Richthofen participated in the murder of her parents, Manfred and Marísia Von Richthofen, on October 31, 2002, having been sentenced to 39 years in prison.

The crime, at first glance, looked like robbery. However, Suzane and the brothers Daniel and Cristian Cravinhos confessed to the murder. Suzane and Daniel were dating at the time.

The three planned the crime, carried out in the family home, in the south zone of São Paulo. At the time, she had told the authorities that her parents did not approve of the relationship and were pressuring her to break off the relationship.

Also according to the testimony, the parents would have started to disapprove of the relationship after discovering that the young people used drugs.

In August 2014, the 1st Criminal Execution Court of Taubaté decided for the progression of the semi-open regime, which allows temporary departures for detainees.

At the time, in her decision, the judge argued that Suzane “has been imprisoned for 12 years, has no record of a disciplinary infraction or any other discrediting factor in her prison history”.

However, Suzane Von Richthofen declared, at the time, in writing, that she had no interest in the semi-open regime for “fearing for her life outside prison”.

Later, in 2015, it progressed again to the semi-open regime.

On June 16, 2016, Justice had authorized the detainee to attend higher education. However, she did not start a course due to the economic situation that she did not allow.

In 2018, the Justice of São Paulo denied a request by Suzane’s defense for the progression to an open regime, claiming that the psychological tests showed traces of childishness, egocentrism and narcissism.

On September 17, 2020, application for review of the 2018 application was denied.

In September 2021, Judge José Damião Pinheiro Machado Cogan, from the 5th Chamber of Criminal Law, granted Suzane von Richthofen the right to attend pharmacy school in Taubaté (SP).

She was serving a semi-open regime at the Santa Maria Eufrásia Pelletier women’s penitentiary, in Tremembé, in the interior of São Paulo.

Now, nearly 20 years after his conviction, Richthofen will serve his sentence openly.

In a note sent to CNN the judiciary reported that the 2nd Criminal Execution Court of Taubaté issued this Wednesday (11) the progression of the Richthofen regime to open, after having “verified compliance with the requirements established by the Penal Execution Law”.

audiovisual productions

Two films were made to portray the Richthofen case: “The Girl Who Killed Her Parents” and “The Boy Who Killed My Parents”.

The person responsible for the script is the writer and criminologist Ilana Casoy. She is also the author of books about the death of Isabella Nardoni.

The productions take place amidst the growth of the “true crime” genre, bringing up debates about a possible confusion between reality and fiction and the romanticization of several cases.
