Moviegoers started the year following the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in the U.S . In February it was the turn of the eyes to look at Germany for the Berlin Festival to then return to the USA for the Oscar . Then critics and film industry professionals headed to Cannes to find out who would be the big winner of Palme d’Or .
The world shows bring together industry professionals, critics and viewers, and are a strategic place for networking, where films can be sold and purchased, and a great space for advertising and releases.
As the first half of 2024 comes to a close, it’s time to pay attention to the national festivals it is us giants of Venice and Toronto .

Gramado Festival – August 9-17
One of the main film events in Brazil, the Gramado Festival has been held annually since 1973 at the Palácio dos Festivais, in the city that gives the event its name, in Rio Grande do Sul. National and international productions of Latin origin are shown and compete for the Kikito.
This year, the Brazilian film that competed in Cannes, “Motel Destino” will be responsible for opening the 52nd edition of the festival. See details of the program here.

Venice Film Festival – August 28th to September 7th
The oldest festival on the list, and consequently one of the most traditional in the industry, is held annually in Italy and is part of the Venice Biennale. It has been held annually since 1935 and features a selection of world-class films, including new productions from prestigious filmmakers, who often choose to premiere their film at the event.
This year, the sequence of “The ghosts have fun” (1988), from Tim Burton with Michael Keaton , Jenna Ortega It is Winona Ryder will open the event. The jury will be chaired by the French actress Isabelle Huppert who will be responsible for delivering the Golden Lion to the big winner of the edition.

Toronto Film Festival – September 5th to 15th
In the final days of Venice, another major festival opens its doors in the Northern Hemisphere. Since 1976, the Toronto Film Festival has opened on the Thursday after Labor Day in Canada. Several award-winning films have been screened in the Canadian city before making their world premieres.
This year, “Eden” with Ana de Armas, Jude Law and Sydney Sweeney, “We Live in a Time” with Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, and the new Elton John documentary are among the productions that will be shown at the event.

Rio Festival – October 5th to 15th
Founded in 1999, from the merger of the Mostra Banco Nacional and the Rio Cine Festival, events that had been part of the city’s cultural calendar since the 1980s, the Rio Festival – Rio de Janeiro Int’l Film Festival is the largest film festival in Latin America, as well as the main meeting of professionals from the audiovisual industry in the region.
Details about the 26th edition have not yet been revealed.

Sao Paulo International Film Festival – October 19th to November 1st
Along with Gramado and Rio, the São Paulo International Film Festival is one of the main film festivals, however, it operates differently from the others. The organization selects hundreds of national and international productions and shows them in several cinemas around the city.
