Pope Francis’ death was announced on Monday (21) by the Vatican Camer, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, around 5am (Brasília time), 10am at the Vatican.

“At 7:35 am this morning (local time), the bishop of Rome, Francisco, returned to the Father’s house. All his life was devoted to the service of the Lord and his church,” said Farrell.

With the Pope’s death, the Holy See will adopt a series of protocols linked to the funeral process and the choice of a new head of the Catholic Church in the conclave.

Until a new pontiff is elected, the Vatican is administered by Camerlengo, who performs functions similar to that of a Pope’s assistant.

In Rome, the flags were raised in half mast, while faithful and tourists gathered in front of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Cause of death

The Holy See released on Monday afternoon (21), the cause of death recorded in the death certificate. According to Andrea Arcangeli, a Vatican doctor, Francisco suffered a stroke and irreversible heart failure, having entered a coma before he died on Monday morning.

First celebrations

The pontiff’s suffrage mass took place at the São João de Latron Basilica in Rome, at 14h of Brasilia, 7 pm local time, being presided by Cardinal Baldo Reina.

Pope Francis’ body was placed in a coffin at 8 pm, local time (15h of Brasilia), after the celebration.

Still on Monday night, a crowd gathered for the second prayer of the third in honor of the pontiff in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Pope’s place of burial in Rome.

Tribute

Around the world honors to Francis’ memory were provided. In Paris, the lights of the Eiffel Tower were turned off and in Buenos Aires, the obelisk of the capital of Argentina, was illuminated with a projection that printed the pontiff’s face, below a symbol of mourning, and the inscription saying “pray for me” in the monument.

Faithful gathered in masses provided to the Pope and countries decreed official mourning.

Authorities made statements lamenting the death and paid tribute. Like former US President Barack Obama and the current, Donald Trump.

Funeral and funeral

The celebrations and rituals of the death of Pope Francis will begin with the funeral open to the public next Wednesday (23), from 9 am local time (4am in Brasilia), this Wednesday, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Catholic Church Camer, will start the rite of transportation of the Pontiff’s coffin, which is in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta.
