The use of the Sarco suicide capsule, also known as the ‘Tesla of euthanasia’, has been suspended just weeks after it was first used by an American woman who took her own life using the controversial device. Sarco was created by Dr. Philip Nitschke, founder and director of Exit International. It was used for the first – and perhaps last – time on September 24, to end the life of a 64-year-old American woman with immune problems. Swiss authorities said Sarco was not approved when it was used in the suicide of the unidentified American woman. A criminal investigation into the capsule is ongoing, and all 371 active applications have been suspended, according to National Review. Switzerland is one of the few countries that allows travelers to legally end their lives under assisted suicide, which does not require the involvement of a doctor but may involve outside help.
