Actually, the new technology works on the basis of many components. The main element of the system is the sensor in the ball, which transmits information about the position of the sports equipment on the football field at a frequency of 500 times per second (this is a very high frequency – modern computer mice transmit information about their movements to the PC at a frequency of 1000 times per second). Also on the football field under the roof of the stadium, twelve surveillance cameras will be installed, which, together with machine learning technology, will track all the players on the field, marking 29 points on the body of each athlete.
Based on the information received, the latest software will fix the offside position, which, theoretically, will greatly simplify the work of referees on the field. The fact is that when the system based on artificial intelligence detects a corresponding violation, it will send a message to the FIFA dispatchers, who will send this message to the referee on the field – then he will be able to notify the violation and suspend the game. According to the FA, the whole process takes a few seconds, so offside decisions can be made much faster and, most importantly, more accurately.
FIFA also said that the content that the new system will generate based on cameras and the behavior of the ball will allow instantaneous animations – they will be displayed on stadium screens and during television broadcasts to explain the violation by a particular team. And, most surprisingly, this is not some kind of technology of the distant future – the AI-based system will be used during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after which, most likely, the technology will be implemented in all the largest stadiums in the world for further operation.
