The actress Fernanda Torres talked about her character in the film “I’m Still Here” directed by Walter Salles and shown at the Venice Film Festival, and highlighted the similarity between Eunice Paiva’s trajectory and Brazil’s trajectory .
“She is a woman that Brazil should know, because she is almost a translation of Brazil,” Torres said in an interview with Canal Brasil. “Eunice and Brazil are synonymous.”
“This woman, who was the perfect housewife in a patriarchal era, had to reinvent herself as a woman. She reinvented herself as a lawyer at a time when Brazil, in its quest for the return of democracy, is also beginning to reinvent itself as a country through a constitution,” he added.
The history of the Paiva family
The film’s story is inspired by the book by the journalist and playwright Marcelo Rubens Paiva published in 2015 and which talks about the terrors faced by his family during the Brazilian military dictatorship.
