Fernanda Torres: from adolescence on stage to the Golden Globe, remember her career

Fernanda Torres, 59, was the big surprise of the night when she won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in the early hours of this Monday (6). The Brazilian is the protagonist of the film “I’m Still Here”, directed by Walter Salles, which did not win Best Non-English Language Film.

Daughter of the iconic Brazilian actor couple Fernando Torres and Fernanda Montenegro, the Brazilian competed for the award and dedicated the trophy to her mother, who was on that same stage 25 years before her.

In a recent interview with the American magazine W Magazine, she was raised backstage at the theaters where her parents worked. Therefore, she herself considers that there was no escape: she would also be an actress.

Debut on TV and cinema

Torres was born in Rio de Janeiro, in 1965, and 13 years later he entered Tablado, a training school for actors, and debuted in theater in the play “Um Tango Argentino”, by Maria Clara Machado. A year later, at the age of 14, he debuted on TV Globo, in the series “Aplauso”, and at 15 he got a role in his first soap opera, “Baila Comigo” (1981), by Manoel Carlos.

While she continued making series and soap operas on television, it was also in the 1980s that Fernanda Torres also started making films, debuting in the film ‘Inocência’ (1983), the first of more than 20 feature films in which she acted.

Among these, the following stand out: “Eu Sei Que Vou te Amar” (1986), by Arnaldo Jabor, which earned Torres the Best Actress award at the Cannes and Cuba film festivals; “Com Excuse, Eu Vou à Luta” (1986), directed by Lui Farias, with which she won the Best Actress award at the Nantes film festival; “Foreign Land” (1996), by Walter Salles Jr. and Daniela Thomas; “What’s That, Mate?” (1997), directed by Bruno Barreto; “Casa de Areia” (2005), directed by Torres’ current husband, Andrucha Waddington.

humor programs

Throughout the 1990s, Torres became known throughout Brazil thanks to her characters in humor and comedy programs on television.

Among his works in comedy, “Os Normais” stands out — a series written by Alexandre Machado and Fernanda Young, directed by José Alvarenga Jr. — starring Torres and Fernando Guimarães, playing the couple Vani and Rui, who shared with the public their anguish and confusion during the engagement.

The success of the series was so great that the characters were given two films: “The Normals – The Movie” (2003) and “The Normals 2 – The Craziest Night Ever” (2009).

The 2011 series “Entre Tapas e Beijos” — written by Cláudio Paiva and directed by Maurício Farias — also marked the career of Fernanda Torres. Alongside Andrea Beltrão, they gave life to Fátima and Sueli, two best friends who faced adult life together and the challenges of their romantic relationships.

"Slaps and Kisses"

In recent interviews, Torres joked that Walter Salles rescued her from comedy with the role of Eunice Paiva in “I’m Still Here”.

Writing

More recently, the actress has also dedicated herself to a career as a screenwriter and writer. In 2013, she released her first book: “Fim”, which was published in 2023.

In 2014, she published a collection of her chronicles in the book “Sete Anos” and, in 2017, she released “A Glória, e Seu Cortejo de Horrores”.

As a screenwriter, Torres made his debut in 2019, with the feature film “O Juízo”, but he was also responsible for the script that adapted “Fim” for television.
