The actress Fernanda Montenegro received an early birthday party on Sunday (18) when presenting the dramatic reading of “The Farewell Ceremony” of Simone de Beauvoir, for an audience of more than 15 thousand people at Ibirapuera Park, in the south of São Paulo.
Encouraged by the actress’s daughter, Fernanda Torres who was also present at the event, the audience sang along to the song “Happy Birthday to You” at the end of the play to celebrate the Fernanda Montenegro will turn 95 on October 16th . Moved after the performance, Montenegro thanked the audience and said that this was her “birthday present”.
The 15,800 tickets for the free presentation on Sunday (18) at the Ibirapuera Auditorium sold out in just 25 minutes after sales opened last Monday (12). While almost 800 people occupied the inside of the auditorium, the other 15,000 settled on sarongs and towels on the lawn to watch the live broadcast of the reading of the text by Fernanda Montenegro.
Before the show began, Fernanda Torres took to the stage to explain a little more about her mother’s relationship with Simone de Beauvoir’s text.
In “The Farewell Ceremony”, the French philosopher reflects on the last decade of the life of the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, with whom she had a relationship, leading to reflections on life and death.
Before going on stage, Fernanda Montenegro gave an interview to Fantástico, on TV Globo, and reflected on continuing to be active as she approaches her 95th birthday.
“My eyes are no longer good, my ears are no longer so good. My entire motor system is no longer so good either. But the subject, the verb and the predicate are still all here. And as long as it is working and I have some possibility of expressing myself, in whatever way, they will put up with me. It is impossible to stop, it is impossible to stop. It is a vocation,” said the actress.
