Federal Police recover historical pieces stolen from the Museum of Arts and Crafts in BH

The Federal Police (PF) recovered and handed over, on Friday (12), 16 of 17 pieces that were stolen from the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Belo Horizonte (MG). The objects were taken from the collection on June 15.

According to the PF, all the pieces have historical value and are listed by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan). The seventeenth piece, a pocket knife, had already been recovered on the day of the theft and the rest on Wednesday (10).

“Now we will once again have our collection 100% complete. It is extremely important to rescue these pieces for the culture not only of Minas Gerais, but also of Brazil,” said Sesi Cultura coordinator Bárbara Laredo.

A man was arrested on the day of the crime and the case was forwarded to the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), according to the museum.

The equipment will be analyzed by the institution’s technicians and those that require repairs will be restored by the facility’s own team.

The expectation, according to the museum, is that the heritage will return to the exhibition next week.

In a note, Sesi also highlighted that, “since the incident, it has sought alternatives to reinforce the security of the space, with the modernization of the electronic monitoring system and the alignment of intelligence strategies with the Municipal Guard of Belo Horizonte”.
