Federal police officer shot dead in Rio’s northern zone

A federal police officer was shot dead by criminals who approached the car the man was driving on Wednesday night (14), in Todos os Santos, in the northern zone of Rio. He was arriving home after an outing with his family.

Sérgio Luiz de Medeiros, 62, was hit in the head. The Fire Department was called, but when they arrived at the scene, Sérgio had already been taken to the Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital in Méier, in the same region. The man did not survive his injuries.

According to the Military Police, teams from the 3rd Battalion (Méier) were called to the scene of a gunshot on Rua Ildefonso Penalba. Upon arriving at the scene, the police found the victim with a head injury inside the vehicle.

The Homicide Division is investigating the case. The main line of investigation so far is that the crime was an attempted robbery.

According to the Fogo Cruzado Institute, which maps armed violence in Rio de Janeiro, 62 security agents were shot in the Rio Metropolitan Region in 2024. 23 died and 39 were injured.
