Federal Government transfers R$30 million to unblock rivers in Manaus

The Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR), through the National Civil Defense, authorized, this Wednesday (22), the transfer of R$30 million to the city of Manaus, in Amazonas.

According to the ministry, the resources will be allocated to dredging works in the São Raimundo, Educandos and Tarumã streams, to unblock and maintain the depth of the mobile bed and ensure navigability.

“We have two ships stopped in Itacoatiara waiting for the river to rise to pass. Each one has around 700 containers for Manaus”, says Luís Fernando Resano, executive director of the Brazilian Association of Cabotage Shipowners (Abac), to CNN.

It is worth noting that the release of streams guarantees the circulation of society in the region and cabotage, the supply and output of production in the region

According to Abac, no cabotage ships arrived in Manaus in the last 30 days. The estimate is that 15 thousand containers stopped arriving and leaving Manaus and the same number stopped leaving Manaus. The initial projection of loss of impact on navigation has intensified: more than 60% of what should be transported may no longer be transported during this period.

“The Amazon has been suffering a lot from the drought and one of Manaus’ problems is exactly reestablishing navigability in the rivers and streams, which are our streets”, highlighted minister Waldez Góes, during a meeting with the mayor of Manaus, David Almeida.

The state’s Civil Defense reports, this Wednesday (22), that, in the last five days, the level of the Rio Negro, in Manaus, has risen 35 cm. All 62 municipalities in Amazonas remain in an emergency situation. Amazonas has 598 thousand people affected so far by the severe drought, or 150 thousand families.
