Federal Court accepts defense request from those accused of killing Bruno and Dom and postpones trial

The Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF1) postponed the trial that would decide whether the fishermen accused of killing indigenous man Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips would go to jury and accepted the defense request of those involved this Tuesday (23) .

The decision to postpone the fishermen's trial was taken in response to the formal request made by their defense.

The applicants argued that the 3rd Federal Panel, responsible for assessing the case, would not be the correct instance, considering that the process had already received previous decisions from the 4th Federal Panel.

Therefore, in consideration of the claim, it was determined by federal judge Ney Bello to withdraw from the trial to evaluate the request presented by the fishermen's defense.

Remember the case

Brazilian indigenist Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips were killed near Vale do Javari, in the state of Amazonas, in June 2022. Ten days after they were last seen, their remains were found.

According to the Federal Police (PF) expert report, Bruno was hit by three shots, while Dom by one.

The crime took place in a region that is home to one of the largest and most important indigenous lands in the country, an area marked by drug trafficking conflicts, illegal fishing and mining.
