The early elections for the presidency of Ecuador, scheduled for August 20, already have a series of official candidates and some pre-candidates, but two of them surprised local political analysts due to their kinship: businessman Álvaro Noboa and his son, the former deputy Daniel Noboa, have formally announced that they will stand as candidates to succeed Guillermo Lasso. Both are right-wing candidates in the country.
On Monday night (29), Álvaro Noboa caused an earthquake in the political scenario by publishing a video on his social networks announcing that he will participate in the election for the sixth time (he was in the disputes of 1998, 2002, 2006, 2009 and 2013). However, he did not say which party or coalition he would run for.
“The people of Ecuador are going through very difficult times. That’s why I accepted the request of the Ecuadorian people to work with them, with the Ecuadorians, as President of the Republic of Ecuador. Let’s go together,” he stated in the video.
Last week, the son of Álvaro Noboa had already announced that he would run for president. Daniel Noboa Azín was a member of the National Assembly, dissolved by President Guillermo Lasso through the measure known as “crossed death”. He must run with the support of a coalition involving the PID movement (People, Equality and Democracy) and Mover (Green, Ethical, Revolutionary and Democratic Movement), former Alianza País.
“I’m a man of projects, who doesn’t give up, it’s in my DNA. I firmly believe that together we can make Ecuador the project we want, with me as president”.
None of the Noboa considered giving up their candidacy in favor of family harmony, which indicates that, unless the party organizations opt for new names, they should even face each other in the country’s short electoral process.
