Farewell to King Constantine of Greece, all the royals who will be at the funeral

There will be his wife and children and with them more than 180 personalities including royals, friends and institutional representatives on Monday 16 January at the funeral of Constantine of Greece in Athens. Not a state funeral, but a funeral with an impressive safety device. Became king in 1964 on the sudden death of his father, he remained on the throne for less than ten years. Only in 2010 did he return to Greece after a life spent between Italy and the United Kingdom. He had ties to all the European royal families and many will be there to greet him.

Married, for love, with Anne-Marie of Denmark, younger sister of Queen Margaret II, Constantine had five children: Alessia, Paolo, Nicola, Teodora and Filippo. The Danish queen will be at the funeral like the queen mother of Spain. Sofia is Costantino’s sister and has been at his bedside in recent weeks like the other sister Irene. There will also be the current Spanish sovereigns, Felipe and Letizia, and the former king of Spain Juan Carlos who, with his brother-in-law, Olympic champion in Rome in 1960, shared a passion for sailing.

Carl Gustaf of Sweden, Prince Haakon of Norway, King William and Queen Máxima of Holland, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg and an unconfirmed representative of the British royal house. They could be Princess Anne or Prince Edward. King Constantine was first cousin to Philip of Edinburgh, father of princes. Constantine of Greece was among Prince William’s godparents.

The Greek Vice-President Panagiotis Pikrammenos and the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendonis, and close friends of the former king, along with other politicians and businessmen will be present. Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes policemen will guarantee the protection of the funeral procession. The former ruler will be buried in the private estate of Tatoi.
