Faithful pray to Papa Francisco in the place chosen for his burial

A crowd gathered on Monday (21) for the second sentence of the third in honor of Pope Francis in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.

Candles were lit on both sides of the Virgin Mary icon, Salus Populi Romani, and flowers were deposited in front of him.

The people present prayed and sang.

The Basilica had a special meaning for Francis, who visited her before and after travel abroad, as well as after hospitalizations.

After receiving hospital discharge earlier this year, he visited the basilica before returning to his residence.

Pope Francis confirmed in his final will that he wanted to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore not in the Basilica of St. Peter, in the Vatican, unlike the previous pontiffs.

The text specified that Francis wanted to be buried “on the floor, without special decoration”, but with the inscription of his papal name in Latin: Franciscus.

Pope Francis’ death

Francisco, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, assumed the title of Pope in March 2013. He marked the history of the Catholic Church as the first Latin American Pope and the first Jesuit to occupy the position.

The pontiff died after a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican doctor Andrea Arcangeli said in a death certificate released on Monday (21) of the 88-year-old pontiff.

The body was expected to be placed in a coffin on Monday.

On the morning of Wednesday (23), will begin the wake of the leader of the Catholic Church, open to the faithful.

The date of the funeral, a ceremony that will precede the burial of Francis, has not yet been released.

The certificate, published by the Vatican, states that Francis went in a coma before his death on the morning of Monday (21).
