FAB aircraft begins first firefighting mission in the Pantanal

A Brazilian Air Force (FAB) aircraft has begun its first mission to combat fires in the Pantanal region. The KC-390 Millennium is in the city of Corumbá (MS) to act in the action against the fires through flights.

The multi-mission aircraft, developed by the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer, has the capacity to carry out a safe operation and is equipped with the Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System, according to the FAB.

MAFFS, from the English “Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System”, is a system that provides the functionality necessary to carry out fire-fighting action in flight.

The equipment has a tube that projects water through the rear door of the plane, and can discharge up to 3 thousand gallons, approximately 12 thousand liters, of water in fire areas

According to the Air Force, this system offers greater precision, “significantly increasing the effectiveness of firefighting operations”, in addition to being able to be quickly installed on any compatible aircraft.

The operation takes place in adverse conditions that require flight at low altitude, low speed and high temperatures, stated the FAB. “This way, it is possible to keep the aircraft pressurized, that is, without compromising performance,” he explained.

Furthermore, the system only requires electrical power from the aircraft to operate and is considered advantageous for this type of situation, as it has the capacity to carry a large volume of water and flame retardants.
